Norman Osborn, played by Willem Dafoe, is a brilliant scientist and industrialist. His company Oscorp develops weapons for the military, including a super soldier serum. While excelling at work, Osborn is a subpar parent, remaining distant from his son Harry.

When the military come to inspect the Oscorp projects, Osborn feels pressure to move his experiments to the next level: human testing. He tests the serum on himself to horrible results. While he does become stronger, he also loses his minds becoming the insane villain Green Goblin. As the Green Goblin, Osborn systematically gets rid of all who opposed him, killing the members of the military that threatened to shut down his work and the board of directors that were going to vote him out of Oscorp. During his plan to kill the latter, he runs into Spider-Man who manages to rescue Mary Jane from sharing the fate of the men she was with that day. Instead of hating Spider-man, he views the hero as the son he never had and tries to recruit him to his side.  Green Goblin is also one of the few villains to figure out Spider-Man’s secret identity after he notices that Peter Parker shares an injury he caused on the masked hero. In an attempt to prove his theory, he kidnaps Peter’s last remaining family member, Aunt May. While Spider-Man rescues Aunt May, Green Goblin has set another trap for him. The web-slinger is forced to pick between saving Mary Jane or saving a train full of children. Spider-man is able to save both before it is too late and follows after the Goblin. Goblin, once more, tries to persuade Spider-Man to join him suggesting that they could be unstoppable together. In the end, Spider-Man refuses to join the Goblin. The Goblin attempts to kill Spider-Man with his hover board but the plan backfires and impales himself instead.
